Thank you to everyone that came to the Blue Gold screening yesterday! We really appreciated it and hope you learned a thing or two about the freshwater crisis. Remember: the power is not in corporations with a thirst for money, but in the individuals (with a potential thirst for water). Hope to see you at film screenings in the future!
The Envirotalk team is hosting a film screening of "Blue Gold" on August 4th from 7-9 PM at the First Parish Church United!
So you're probably thinking...what is Blue Gold? (The colors of THE DRESS?) Blue Gold is a film that deals with the causes and effects of the global water crisis. While it may not seem like it in Westford, water is becoming a limited resource and scientists have actually predicted it to be one of the root causes of world war in the future. It is a rather dire situation, but as the people WE can inspire change- so come and learn more about the crisis and what you can do this Tuesday! With scientists predicting the next world war to be fought over water, global drought is threatening the future of our planet. Yet, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American uses over 300 gallons of water a day- and you may not even know it! So how can we reduce our water usage?
FACT: If all US citizens averaged 4-5 flushes daily, it would amount to 5 billion gallons of clean water down the drain, enough to supply drinking water to the entire population of Chicago for more than 6 years.
FACT: Two local Westford high school students, Nihar and Harshal Sheth, created an algorithm to determine the optimal times for watering a lawn (and won the local Google Science Fair award!) .
